What happens to the survivor benefits if my spouse or common-law partner (survivor post-retirement) dies before me?

Upon your death,

If you have dependent children

Each dependent child will receive a monthly pension equal to 20% of your unreduced pension, instead of 10%, to a maximum of 80% shared equally among all dependent children.

If you do not have dependent children

Your beneficiary or estate (if you have not named a beneficiary) will receive the greater of:

  • your Plan contributions with interest to your pension commencement date, or
  • five times your unreduced annual accrued pension at the date of your death

minus any benefits paid to the date of your death.

Note: Depending on the number of years you have received pension benefits, there may be no remaining benefit payable from the Plan.

Where can my survivors get information about what to do upon my death?

Information to assist your survivors is available under For survivors.
